1. Local Events
Kansas City
The Greater Kansas City area has plenty of things to entertain us from concerts to shows and everything in between. If you’re looking for something to occupy children of all ages this summer or are looking for an excuse to have a date night, consider any of the following local events:
- Kansas City Royals Baseball
- Kansas City Zoo
- Union Station (and Science City at Union Station)
- Negro League Baseball Museum
- Jazz Museum
- World War I Museum
- George Strait at Arrowhead Stadium – July 30
- Jazzoo – August 26
- Alan Jackson at T-Mobile Center – August 27
- Kansas City Renaissance Festival – September 3-October 16
- NASCAR at Kansas City Speedway – September 16-October 29
Leawood, Kansas
We’re biased, but Leawood is spectacular. There are plenty of things to do, places to explore, and events to attend. While Kansas City is a short drive, there are plenty of local things here in Leawood to keep the family busy this summer.
- Adventures in History Camp – July 18-22
- Escher String Quartet – August 3
- September Sounds Concert Series Featuring the M80s – September 9
- City Park(ed) – September 17
2. Host a BBQ/Party
Who doesn’t love attending a BBQ or summer party? Take advantage of the warm weather and late sunsets by throwing a backyard BBQ or party this season. No matter the type of party you’re going to be hosting (birthday, pool party, BBQ, Labor Day, etc.) there are some general things you’ll want to provide your guests. Providing ample seating, food, drinks, and entertainment will make your guests comfortable.
3. Take a Staycation
If you’ve never taken a staycation then you’re missing out! Whether you live in the Greater Kansas City area or near Leawood, Kansas, there are plenty of things to fill your staycation with. Choose a hotel that’s some distance from your home and activities that are both relaxing and exciting to keep everyone entertained. Staycations are a great way to escape the everyday hustle and bustle while exploring your city like a tourist. Plus, it saves money since you barely need to spend money on travel expenses.
4. Enjoy Nature
There are so many local parks and hiking trails to explore, so why not pack up some backpacks and take the whole family this summer? As long as you get an early start or go later in the afternoon you’ll miss the heat of the day, keeping everyone a little cooler. Kids of all ages will love seeing what nature has to offer and playing in the great outdoors.
5. Get Crafty
Who says crafting is just for rainy days? Did you know that crafting benefits children? From preschoolers that are learning fine motor skills and counting to middle-schoolers and teens who are struggling with self-esteem and emotions, crafting can help improve these skills and increase their self-esteem. Crafting is a great way to spend quality time with your kids, giving you a chance to have some fun one-on-one time with them.
While summertime is arguably one of the best seasons, it’s easy to get into a slump quickly with the heat and the kids out of school. Trying any of the activities above will get the family moving, helping you take full advantage of what summer has to offer!
Children whose parents are going through a divorce are more likely to get into a slump if they’re unmotivated and don’t do much in the summer. If you’re a client of The Kuhl Law Firm, LLC and have some questions about how to help your kids cope or feel better throughout the divorce process, send us a message.
